Animal Assisted Therapy Interventions

Overview

We understand the powerful impact of animals on our well-being. As dog lovers ourselves, we know firsthand how grounding and intuitive dogs can be. That's why we've made it a priority to have therapy dogs in our offices. We recognize that therapy dogs can establish an unspoken connection with our clients, leading to incredible healing. The presence of therapy dogs has brought numerous benefits to our clinic, and we continue to value their important role in supporting our clients' well-being.

Our Approach

Animal Assisted Interventions

As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and effective treatment options, we are excited to offer Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) with our therapeutic pets: Kona the Golden Doodle, Dr. Watson the Golden Retriever, Bernie the Bull Dog, and the occasional additional of their other furry friends!

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is an evidence-based intervention that involves trained animals as a part of the therapeutic process. At Providence Therapy, our team recognizes the profound positive impact that animals can have on emotional well-being, and we have integrated them into our practice to provide a unique therapeutic experience.

During AAT sessions, you may encounter animals such as Kona, Dr. Watson, and/or Bernie. These animals are not registered service animals but are fully trained and well-behaved companions. They are here to provide comfort, support, and companionship throughout your therapeutic journey. It's important to note that although they may sometimes act more like dogs than therapists, we have witnessed the tremendous benefits that outweigh any potential disruptions.

The benefits of AAT are vast and can contribute to the overall effectiveness of therapy.

Some of the benefits include...

1. Emotional Support:

Animals offer unconditional love and acceptance, creating a safe space for clients to explore their emotions and vulnerabilities.

2. Stress Reduction:

Interacting with animals has shown to reduce stress levels and lower blood pressure, promoting relaxation and emotional regulation.

3. Increased Socialization:

Animals can help individuals improve their social skills, build trust, and enhance their ability to form connections with others.

4. Enhanced Communication:

Animals can serve as a non-judgmental presence, allowing clients to express themselves more openly and effectively.

5. Mood Elevation:

The presence of animals often brings joy, laughter, and positive emotions, leading to an uplifted mood and increased overall well-being.

Animal Assisted Therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including but not limited to:

Children and Adolescents:

AAT can be particularly helpful for children and teenagers experiencing anxiety, trauma, or behavioural issues. It provides a gentle and nurturing environment for them to explore emotions and develop coping skills.

Individuals with Mental Health Conditions:

AAT has shown promise in assisting individuals with depression, PTSD, anxiety disorders, and other mental health conditions. Animals can provide comfort during difficult moments and aid in the healing process.

Survivors of Trauma:

If you have experienced trauma, animals can offer a unique sense of safety and trust, creating opportunities for healing and recovery.

Disclaimer:

While our therapeutic pets are trained and well-behaved, they are animals and may occasionally exhibit typical dog-like behaviours during sessions. It's important to understand that they are not acting as therapists, but rather as supportive companions on your journey towards healing. We have found that the incredible benefits they bring far outweigh any minor disruptions that may occur. However, if you have concerns about their being a therapeutic pet in session, please let us know.

If you are interested in incorporating Animal Assisted Therapy into your counseling sessions at Providence Therapy, please feel free to contact us. Our team will be happy to discuss this option, answer any questions you may have, and determine if it aligns with your therapeutic goals.

We look forward to supporting you on your path to healing, with the assistance of our incredible therapeutic pets!
