What if healing were not something you had to chase, but something already alive inside you? AEDP helps you find it, feel it, and build your life around it.
about approach
AEDP, or Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy, is a transformative, emotion-focused therapy developed by Dr. Diana Fosha. At its heart, AEDP begins with a bold and deeply hopeful premise: you are not broken, and healing is not something you have to earn. It is a natural capacity already living inside you. Every person carries an innate drive toward growth, connection, and wholeness, and AEDP is designed to help that drive come alive. Rather than cataloguing what went wrong or analyzing problems from a distance, AEDP gets into the real work quickly, with warmth, skill, and deep respect for everything you have already survived.
What makes AEDP distinct is that it works with the whole person: your emotions, your body, and the lived experience of being in a safe relationship with another human being. Grounded in decades of research in attachment science, affective neuroscience, and trauma treatment, AEDP does not just help you understand your story. It helps you change how you carry it. Sessions are experiential, relational, and carefully paced, and they are oriented not only toward reducing suffering but toward cultivating what AEDP calls "transformational experience," the felt, embodied sense that something real has shifted. This is therapy for people who are ready to do more than cope. It is therapy for people ready to actually heal.
Why you might be here
Maybe you have been carrying something heavy for a long time: grief, trauma, anxiety, or a quiet sense that something inside just feels stuck. Perhaps past experiences have left you feeling disconnected from yourself, struggling in relationships, or unable to fully show up in your own life. You may have tried to push through, to logic your way out of the pain, or simply to survive. And while you have done a remarkable job getting here, part of you knows there is more healing available.
You do not have to keep white-knuckling it alone. AEDP is for people who are ready, even just a little bit ready, to let someone walk alongside them into the deeper places. Whether you feel emotions intensely and do not know what to do with them, or whether you feel mostly numb and disconnected from your feelings entirely, you belong here. AEDP meets you exactly where you are and works with what is true for you right now, without rushing, without judgment, and without leaving you to do it alone.

how therapy helps
At Providence, our AEDP therapists are trained to create a space that is warm, safe, and genuinely attuned to you. We understand that healing does not happen in isolation. It happens in relationship. The therapeutic connection itself becomes the vehicle for change, helping your nervous system learn what it feels like to be truly seen, held, and understood. Through careful, moment-to-moment attention to your emotions and body experience, we help you gently move through the experiences that have kept you stuck, not by reliving them, but by processing them in a new way, with support.
Our trauma-focused, experiential approach means we are not just talking about the past. We are working with it in a real, felt way. AEDP is known for its commitment to "undoing aloneness," meaning you never have to process the hard things by yourself. Together, we track what is happening in your body, what emotions are moving through you, and what shifts are beginning to emerge. And we celebrate those shifts. AEDP is unique in actively working with positive states and transformational experiences, because healing at Providence is not just about reducing pain. It is about discovering what is possible on the other side of it.

For Your Clarity
Traditional talk therapy often focuses on understanding and insight. AEDP goes further by working with emotions and the body in real time. It is experiential. You do not just talk about change; you begin to feel and experience it during sessions. That embodied shift is what makes the healing last.
AEDP is designed for exactly that. Whether you feel flooded by emotions or completely disconnected from them, your therapist will gently and skillfully help you build your capacity to access and work with your emotional experience over time. You do not need to arrive with your feelings figured out.
"Accelerated" refers to how AEDP works directly with emotions and the body to catalyze deep change more efficiently, rather than spending years in purely cognitive analysis. It does not mean rushed. It means we get to what matters, with intention and care, and change tends to become noticeable sooner.
Yes. AEDP is deeply trauma-informed and is considered one of the most effective experiential approaches for healing attachment trauma and complex trauma. It works gently with the emotional and body-based residue of difficult experiences, at a pace your nervous system can handle.
No. AEDP is thoughtful about how it approaches difficult material. You will not be pushed to relive trauma in a way that overwhelms you. Your therapist will always work with what feels safe and manageable, keeping your nervous system's capacity front and center throughout your work together.
Every person's journey is unique. Some people notice meaningful shifts in a relatively short time; others find that deeper healing unfolds over a longer period. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to understand your goals and build a path that makes sense for where you are right now.
