Couples Counselling

Two people, one relationship, and a whole lot of history. Let's work with all of it.

why you might be here

Something between you has shifted, and you can both feel it.

Maybe the arguments have started to feel circular, like you're having the same fight over and over with no resolution in sight. Maybe there's distance where there used to be closeness, or a rupture that happened and neither of you quite knows how to move past it. You might be dealing with the aftermath of infidelity, a slow erosion of emotional or physical intimacy, clashing parenting styles, or simply the weight of years of small disconnections that have quietly added up. Whatever it is, you're here because you care enough to try.

‍

Or perhaps things aren't in crisis, but you're aware that your patterns aren't working and you want support before they become harder to shift. Some couples come to therapy early, others come having nearly reached the end of their rope. We work with both, and we don't believe it's ever too late to learn something new about yourself or each other.

how therapy helps

Building connection that can hold the weight of real life.

At Providence, our couples therapists are trained in some of the most research-supported and relationally rich approaches available, including Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), the Gottman Method, and the Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT). These are not surface-level communication skill trainings. They are deep frameworks for understanding what's actually happening between two people and why certain patterns repeat, no matter how much you both want to stop them.

We work with the attachment needs, nervous system responses, and core emotional experiences that drive conflict and disconnection. That means going beneath behaviour to understand what each partner is actually reaching for, and helping you find each other in moments where you've historically missed. Our approach is trauma-informed, which matters because many of the patterns that show up in relationships are rooted in experiences that long predate the relationship itself. We bring warmth, directness, and a genuine investment in what's possible for you as a couple.

How do we know if couples counselling is right for us?

If your relationship is causing either of you significant distress, if you feel stuck in patterns you can't seem to break, or if you've experienced a breach of trust that you don't know how to move through, couples counselling is worth considering. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit. Many couples find that therapy helps them build a stronger foundation before problems become entrenched.

Do you work with couples who are thinking about separating?

Yes. Some couples come to therapy hoping to repair the relationship, and others come because they want support in making a thoughtful decision about whether to stay or go. We can help you get clear on what you each need and whether those needs can be met within the relationship. Discernment counselling is one approach we draw on for couples at a crossroads.

What if one of us is more reluctant to come than the other?

That's extremely common. Often one partner is further along in seeking help than the other, and that's okay. A therapist can work with that dynamic. We'd encourage the more hesitant partner to come to a first session with genuine curiosity rather than a firm position. Many people who arrive uncertain leave feeling like it was worthwhile.

Do you work with LGBTQ+ couples?

Absolutely, and without exception. Our therapists work with couples of all genders, orientations, and relationship structures. We understand that LGBTQ+ couples may face unique stressors, including family rejection, systemic discrimination, and navigating relationship models that don't always have cultural roadmaps. Our approach is affirming, respectful, and attuned to the full context of your relationship.

How is couples therapy different from individual therapy for relationship issues?

Individual therapy can be a powerful place to explore your patterns and history. Couples therapy works with the relationship itself as the primary focus, which means both partners are in the room and the therapist is attending to what's happening between you in real time. The relational dynamic becomes material for the work in a way that isn't possible in individual sessions.

How long does couples counselling typically take?

It varies. Some couples see meaningful shifts in a short course of therapy, while others benefit from longer-term support. Factors like the severity of the presenting concerns, how long patterns have been in place, and the commitment of both partners all play a role. We'll discuss a realistic picture of the work during your intake process and check in on progress regularly.
