What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. Originally designed to treat post-traumatic stress, EMDR has since become one of the most researched and widely recognized trauma therapies in the world, with growing applications for anxiety, depression, phobias, grief, chronic pain, and complex trauma. Its effectiveness is endorsed by major health organizations globally, including the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association.

‍

At its core, EMDR works by targeting memories that have become "stuck" in the nervous system - experiences that continue to generate distress, intrusive thoughts, or emotional reactivity long after they've passed. Rather than requiring clients to talk extensively about what happened, EMDR uses a structured eight-phase protocol combined with bilateral stimulation (typically guided eye movements, auditory tones, or gentle taps) to activate the brain's natural information-processing system. Through this process, distressing memories are reprocessed and integrated at a neurological level, allowing them to lose their emotional charge and settle into the past where they belong; so they become part of your story, rather than something that continues to run your present.

Why you might be here

The Past Keeps Showing Up No Matter What You Do

Maybe you've already done "the work". You've journaled, you've talked it out, you've tried thinking about it differently, you've meditated, you've read the books... this list goes on! And yet something still feels stuck. A particular memory catches you off guard. Certain people, places, or situations still send your nervous system into overdrive, and no amount of reasoning seems to talk you out of it. You might be navigating the ongoing weight of trauma, PTSD, anxiety, or grief, or you might simply have the sense that something from your past is quietly running the show in your present in ways you can't always fully explain.

‍

If this resonates, you're not alone, and more importantly, you're not broken! The very responses that feel so overwhelming right now are your nervous system's attempt to protect you, doing the best job it knows how. EMDR works with that wisdom, not against it, by helping your brain complete the processing it never got to finish.

‍

Whether you're dealing with a single distressing event or a longer history of complex experiences, EMDR offers a well-researched, deeply effective pathway toward real relief, and we would genuinely love to support you in finding it!

EMDR at Providence: Precision, Depth, and Lasting Results

EMDR has earned its reputation as one of the most effective trauma therapies available, and for good reason. The research is robust, and the outcomes are real. But what many people seeking EMDR don't always know is that the way it's applied matters enormously. EMDR is not a rigid, one-size-fits-all protocol. It is a highly adaptable framework that, in the hands of a skilled and experienced clinician, can be tailored and integrated with other modalities to address the specific nuances of your history, nervous system, and therapeutic goals. How EMDR is paced, structured, and layered with other supports can make the difference between a process that feels manageable and one that feels re-traumatizing; and that's exactly why the expertise of your therapist matters so deeply.

At Providence Therapy, our EMDR practitioners don't just hold basic training; they bring advanced certification, specialized experience in complex trauma and dissociation, and a deep understanding of how to pace and adapt the approach safely and effectively for each individual client. We understand that trauma is rarely straightforward, and we are trained to recognize when standard protocols need to be modified, slowed down, or supplemented with additional stabilization and resourcing before processing begins. This means you receive not just EMDR, but EMDR done well.

Our work is also deeply integrative by nature. Depending on your specific needs, EMDR at Providence may be thoughtfully woven together with parts-based approaches like IFS, somatic and body-centred interventions, relational attunement strategies, polyvagal-informed regulation work, OEI, or neurotherapy supports; creating a comprehensive, personalized treatment experience that goes well beyond what a standalone session might offer. Choosing a therapist who not only knows EMDR but knows how to use it skillfully within the full landscape of your healing is one of the most important decisions you can make - and it's exactly the kind of care our team is built to provide.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is EMDR, and how does it work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories that have become stuck in the nervous system. Using bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements, taps, or tones), EMDR activates the brain's natural information processing system, allowing memories to be integrated and lose their emotional charge. You don't need to describe events in extensive detail for EMDR to be effective; much of the process works at a neurological level, beneath the surface of conscious storytelling.

What can I expect in a first EMDR session at Providence?

Your first session (or first few) is focused on connection, context, and safety; not processing. Your therapist will take time to understand your history, your goals, and what brings you in. Before any trauma processing begins, we invest meaningfully in building your capacity for emotional regulation and nervous system stabilization. EMDR at Providence is never rushed; we move at the pace that is right for you, and you will always know what to expect before we take the next step.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on the nature and complexity of what you're working on. Single-incident trauma may resolve in as few as 6-12 sessions, while complex or developmental trauma typically calls for a longer, more gradual process. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to build a realistic treatment plan and revisit it as your progress unfolds. There is no pressure to move faster than your nervous system is ready for.

Can EMDR be done effectively online?

Yes! & No. EMDR can be delivered very effectively via secure video sessions, and many clients find it equally impactful in an online format. Our therapists are experienced in adapting bilateral stimulation techniques for virtual delivery and will make sure you have everything you need to engage safely and comfortably from wherever you are. For clients with more complex presentations, however, in-person sessions are usually recommended over online as there can be other factors relevant to your care that an in-person setting is best suited for; your therapist will have an open conversation with you about what's the right fit.

Is EMDR safe? Are there any risks?

EMDR is considered a safe, well-researched therapy when delivered by a trained and qualified clinician. It is normal to experience some level of emotional activation during or after processing sessions, which is exactly why preparation and stabilization are built into the protocol from the very beginning. At Providence Therapy, our EMDR therapists hold advanced certifications, and many specialize in complex trauma and dissociation, ensuring your process is carefully paced, closely monitored, and supported every step of the way.

Is EMDR only for PTSD, or can it help with other concerns?

While EMDR was originally developed for PTSD, its applications have expanded considerably over the years. It is now widely and effectively used to treat anxiety, depression, phobias, grief, chronic pain, attachment wounds, relationship trauma, complex developmental trauma, and more. At Providence, our therapists are trained to adapt EMDR across a wide range of presentations and will work with you to determine whether it's the right fit or whether a combination of approaches would best serve your unique healing journey.
