Four decades. Over three thousand couples. And a surprisingly hopeful set of findings about what actually makes love last.
about approach
The Gottman Method is a structured, research-based approach to couples therapy developed by Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, built on over four decades of empirical research into what makes relationships thrive, and what causes them to unravel. Unlike approaches that rely primarily on clinical intuition or theoretical frameworks, the Gottman Method emerged directly from the systematic observation of thousands of couples in Dr. John Gottman's research facility at the University of Washington, affectionately known as the "Love Lab", where relationship patterns, physiological responses, and long-term outcomes were studied with remarkable scientific precision. What emerged from that research was both sobering and genuinely hopeful: the patterns that predict relationship failure are identifiable, learnable, and changeable.
The model is organized around the Sound Relationship House - a framework that maps the architecture of a healthy, lasting partnership across seven interconnected levels, from building deep Love Maps of each other's inner world, to nurturing fondness and admiration, to turning toward each other's bids for connection, to managing conflict with skill and care, to supporting each other's dreams and building shared meaning together. Holding the entire structure together are two foundational walls: trust and commitment. Central to Gottman's research is the identification of what he calls the Four Horsemen - four communication patterns that predict relationship deterioration with striking accuracy: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. The good news is that each Horseman has a well-researched antidote, and learning to recognize and replace these patterns is one of the most concrete and immediately impactful things a couple can do together.
Why you might be here
Maybe the relationship isn't in crisis - but something has shifted. The easy warmth that used to be there feels harder to access, conversations that should be simple keep turning into something charged, and you find yourselves in the same patterns without quite knowing how you got there again. Or perhaps things have escalated, conflict is frequent, one or both of you has started to feel contempt or hopelessness creeping in, and the distance between you feels harder and harder to bridge. You might be a couple that functions well on the surface but privately longs for more genuine connection, intimacy, and the sense of being truly known.
Gottman therapy is particularly well-suited for couples who appreciate clarity, structure, and a concrete understanding of what is actually happening in their relationship, and what to do about it. If you've ever found yourself mid-argument and thought "I don't even know how we got here," or noticed that the same cycle plays out regardless of the topic, the Gottman framework offers something genuinely illuminating: a research-based map of exactly what is happening, why it is happening, and the specific skills that will change it. This approach is not about assigning blame or diagnosing what's wrong with your relationship. It is about understanding your unique dynamic with honesty, care, and the confidence that change is not only possible; it is well-documented.

how therapy helps
The research behind the Gottman Method is among the most extensive in the couples therapy field. Gottman's studies have demonstrated that the presence of the Four Horsemen, particularly contempt, predicts relationship dissolution with over 90% accuracy, and that couples who regularly turn toward each other's bids for connection do so in 86% of interactions, compared to 33% in couples who divorce. The 5:1 ratio of positive to negative interactions (the threshold that distinguishes what Gottman calls the "masters" from the "disasters") is one of the most replicated findings in relationship science. These are not abstract statistics. They are observable, measurable patterns that show up in the couples we work with every day, and the skills that change them are concrete, learnable, and immediately applicable.
At Providence, Gottman-trained therapists bring the model's structured, research-based framework to couples who benefit from a clear, practical approach to understanding and improving their relationship. For some couples, the Gottman Method's emphasis on building friendship, strengthening positive sentiment, and developing specific conflict management skills is exactly what they need; particularly in the earlier stages of couples work, where establishing safety, reducing escalation, and building a common language for what is happening can make an enormous difference. For other couples, Gottman principles are woven alongside EFT's deeper emotional and attachment work, creating a comprehensive treatment experience that addresses both the skills layer and the emotional depth of the relationship. Whether you are seeking the full Gottman model or a Gottman-informed approach integrated into broader couples work, our team will work with you to find the right fit; always honest about what we offer and what will genuinely serve your relationship best.

For Your Clarity
The Four Horsemen - criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling - are the communication patterns Gottman's research identified as the most reliable predictors of relationship deterioration. Contempt, in particular, the expression of superiority or disgust toward a partner, is the single strongest predictor of relationship failure in Gottman's data. The hopeful news is that each Horseman has a specific, practised antidote: gentle start-up, building a culture of appreciation, taking responsibility, and physiological self-soothing, respectively. Learning to recognize and replace these patterns is often one of the most immediately impactful parts of Gottman's work.
Not at all - and some of the most valuable Gottman work happens with couples who are fundamentally solid but want to deepen their connection, understand each other better, and build more intentional habits before patterns calcify. Gottman therapy is equally applicable for couples navigating a specific challenge, couples who want to strengthen an already good relationship, and couples in significant distress. The model is designed to meet relationships wherever they are.
Yes - and this is often how we use it. Gottman's skills-based framework integrates naturally alongside EFT's emotional depth work, attachment-based approaches, and individual trauma-focused therapy. For couples where one or both partners are simultaneously doing individual work around trauma, attachment wounds, or personal patterns, the Gottman framework provides a clear relational structure that supports and deepens the individual healing happening in parallel. Our team will work with you to build the right combination for your specific situation.
The Gottman Method is a research-based, skills-focused approach to couples therapy grounded in over forty years of scientific study. Where approaches like EFT centre primarily on emotional experience and attachment dynamics, the Gottman Method places significant emphasis on concrete, learnable skills - understanding your partner's inner world, recognizing and replacing destructive communication patterns, and building the friendship and positive sentiment that sustain long-term connection. Many couples benefit from elements of both, and at Providence, our team can draw from either or both depending on what fits best.
Gottman sessions tend to be more structured and skills-oriented than some other couples therapy approaches. Your therapist will draw from the research-based tools of the model, which might include exploring your Love Maps, identifying the Four Horsemen in your specific conflict patterns, practising new interaction sequences, and working toward a clearer understanding of each other's needs, dreams, and values. Sessions are warm and collaborative - never clinical or cold - and always grounded in a genuine respect for the complexity and uniqueness of your relationship.
