Psychodynamic Therapy

Most of what drives us lives below the surface. Psychodynamic therapy is how we go down and have a look.

What is Psychodynamic Therapy?

Psychodynamic therapy is a depth-oriented approach rooted in the understanding that much of what shapes our emotions, behaviours, and relationships operates below the level of conscious awareness. Evolved from psychoanalytic traditions and significantly modernized over the past century, it is less about lying on a couch recounting dreams and more about developing a genuine, curious understanding of the unconscious patterns, early relational blueprints, and protective strategies that quietly run the show in our present-day lives. The central premise is both simple and profound: when we can see a pattern clearly, feel the emotion beneath it, and understand something about where it came from, we gain the capacity to respond differently.

‍

Central to psychodynamic work is the exploration of how early relationships - particularly with primary caregivers - form internal templates that shape how we relate to others, ourselves, and the world for years to come. These templates often operate through defence mechanisms - unconscious strategies we developed to protect ourselves from painful feelings, which once served us well but may now be creating the very difficulties we're trying to solve. Psychodynamic therapy brings these patterns gently into the light through techniques including free association, exploration of recurring relational themes, and attention to what unfolds within the therapeutic relationship itself - a process known as transference, where feelings about important figures in our lives show up in how we experience our therapist, and become rich material for understanding and healing.

Why you might be here

You Keep Ending Up in the Same Place - and You're Not Sure Why

Maybe you've noticed it - the same relational dynamic playing out across different relationships, the same emotional reaction arising in situations that seem unrelated, the same inner conflict showing up in different costumes. You might feel like you understand yourself reasonably well on the surface, and yet keep doing things, feeling things, or choosing things that don't quite line up with what you consciously want. Perhaps there's a persistent anxiety, a pattern of self-sabotage, a way of disconnecting when things get close, or a tendency to repeat experiences from your past without quite knowing how you keep getting there.

Psychodynamic therapy is particularly well-suited to exactly this kind of question - the one that begins with "I know I do this, but I don't know why." It is not a quick fix or a symptom-management approach; it is an investment in genuine self-understanding. For people who have done surface-level work and want to go deeper, or who sense that what they're dealing with has roots that haven't yet been reached, psychodynamic therapy offers a thorough, thoughtful, and genuinely illuminating path toward lasting change

Going Deeper: Psychodynamic Therapy at Providence

Psychodynamic therapy has a robust evidence base, particularly for complex, chronic, and relational presentations where briefer, more symptom-focused approaches have had limited impact. Research consistently shows that its benefits tend to increase over time rather than plateau, reflecting the depth of the internal shifts it facilitates. What clients consistently report is not just relief from symptoms but a fundamentally different relationship with themselves - greater self-awareness, more flexibility in how they respond to life's challenges, and a clearer sense of who they are beneath the patterns they've spent years managing.

At Providence, psychodynamic principles inform the depth and relational quality of how we work across our entire clinical framework. Rather than a standalone modality, psychodynamic thinking is woven through our broader trauma-focused, experiential approach - providing the insight and meaning-making layer that sits beneath the body-based processing of EMDR and somatic work, and alongside the parts-based exploration of IFS. We bring genuine curiosity to what lives beneath the surface of a client's presenting concerns, tracking recurring themes, relational patterns, and the moments when the past seems to be speaking loudly in the present; always with warmth, care, and the deep respect that real depth work deserves.

Psychodynamic Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychodynamic therapy, and how is it different from psychoanalysis?

Psychodynamic therapy evolved from classical psychoanalysis but is considerably more accessible, flexible, and present-focused. While traditional psychoanalysis involved multiple sessions per week over many years, modern psychodynamic therapy is typically weekly, collaborative, and oriented toward practical insight and lasting change. The emphasis on the unconscious, early relationships, and recurring patterns remains - but the approach is warmer, more relational, and significantly more adaptable to each individual client.

What kinds of concerns is psychodynamic therapy best suited for?

It is particularly valuable for complex, chronic, or relational presentations - persistent anxiety or depression, recurring relational difficulties, patterns of self-sabotage, identity struggles, unresolved grief, and the sense of repeating experiences without understanding why. It is also well-suited for people who want more than symptom relief - those who are curious about themselves and ready to invest in a deeper understanding of what drives them.

What does a psychodynamic session actually feel like?

Sessions tend to feel like a thoughtful, open-ended conversation - less structured than some approaches, with space to follow what feels most alive or pressing. Your therapist will listen closely, reflect patterns back, and ask questions designed to open up understanding rather than direct you toward predetermined answers. Over time, themes emerge, connections become visible, and insight grows 0 often in ways that feel genuinely surprising and clarifying.

How long does psychodynamic therapy take?

Because psychodynamic therapy works at the level of deep patterns rather than surface symptoms, it tends to be longer-term than more structured approaches. That said, meaningful shifts in self-understanding can begin relatively early, and the depth and pace of the work are always tailored to the individual. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to establish realistic expectations and check in regularly on how the work is unfolding.

Can psychodynamic therapy be combined with other approaches?

Yes - and at Providence it frequently is. Psychodynamic thinking integrates naturally alongside EMDR, somatic therapy, IFS, art therapy, and attachment-based work, providing the depth and meaning-making layer that enriches and contextualizes the broader treatment. The insight generated through psychodynamic exploration often deepens and accelerates the processing work happening through other modalities - and vice versa.
