TRE® — Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises

Your body has always known how to shake it off. TRE is just the official permission slip.

What is TRE?

Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®) is a simple, body-based therapeutic practice developed by Dr. David Berceli, a trauma specialist and conflict resolution expert who spent decades working in some of the world's most high-stress and post-conflict environments. What he observed, time and again across vastly different cultures and populations, was the same thing: the body has a built-in mechanism for releasing stress and trauma. And that mechanism is tremoring; the involuntary, neurogenic shaking that the nervous system naturally initiates when it is ready to discharge the survival energy that stress and trauma leave behind. If that sounds a little strange, you're not alone; most of us were raised in a culture that treats trembling as a sign of weakness, overwhelm, or loss of control. But look to the animal kingdom and a different picture emerges. Mammals that survive a threat - a chase, a near-miss, a moment of genuine danger - don't sit down and analyze it. They shake. Visibly, freely, and without apology. And then they move on. This neurogenic tremor response is the nervous system's own reset button, and humans have it too. We have simply learned to suppress it. TRE is the practice of safely and intentionally reawakening it.

‍

A TRE session involves a carefully sequenced series of gentle physical exercises designed to fatigue specific muscle groups, particularly the psoas muscle and surrounding hip flexors, which are among the deepest stress-holding muscles in the body. Once these muscles reach a gentle point of fatigue, the brain stem takes over and natural, self-generated tremors begin to move through the body, spreading from the legs upward through the torso, spine, and beyond. These tremors are not forced or performed; they arise organically from the nervous system itself, and with a trained guide present, they are safe, manageable, and often deeply releasing. Over time and with practice, TRE becomes a self-directed regulation tool that clients can use independently, making it one of the most empowering and accessible body-centred approaches available.

Why you might be here

Your Body Is Holding More Than You've Had Words For

You might carry tension that never fully leaves, a tightness in your hips, a jaw that won't quite unclench, a chronic low hum of physical stress that no amount of massage, stretching, or good intentions seems to fully resolve. Maybe you've been through something significant, and the feelings aren't fully accessible, but your body tells its own story through fatigue, restlessness, disrupted sleep, or a startle response that fires at the smallest things. Or perhaps there hasn't been any one dramatic event, just years of accumulated stress, pressure, overextension, and the constant low-grade effort of keeping everything together, and your body has simply reached the point where it is done quietly absorbing all of it.TRE is not only for people navigating clinical trauma or PTSD, but it is for anyone whose nervous system is carrying more than it was designed to hold indefinitely.

If you've ever felt chronically wound up and wired, or conversely flat, heavy, and disconnected from your body, or if you've noticed that your stress doesn't release the way it once did, TRE may be exactly what your system has been waiting for. The beauty of this approach is that it doesn't require you to analyze, narrate, or even fully understand what your body is holding. It simply invites the body to do what it has always known how to do, and gives it the safety to finally follow through.

Shaking Things Loose: TRE at Providence and Why It Works

TRE has been generating meaningful clinical interest for its simplicity, accessibility, and the depth of relief it can produce, particularly for people who have found that more cognitive or verbal approaches haven't quite reached the physical layer of their stress and trauma. Studies have explored TRE's applications for PTSD, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, and burnout; and clinical reports consistently highlight that its benefits often extend well beyond sessions, with clients noting improved sleep, reduced physical tension, and a quieter baseline nervous system for days or even weeks afterward.

What many people discovering TRE for the first time don't always realize is how much range exists within this practice, and how significantly the experience can differ depending on the guidance of the person facilitating it. TRE is not simply a set of exercises to be run through on a checklist. When integrated skillfully within a broader clinical framework, it becomes a precise and responsive tool for working with the nervous system, one that can be paced, adapted, and combined with other somatic and trauma-informed approaches in ways that make the process both deeper and more sustainable. How quickly or slowly tremoring is introduced, how it is held within the broader therapeutic container, and how it is woven alongside other interventions are all dimensions that shape the quality and safety of the experience. Seeking a certified TRE provider who also holds broader clinical training in trauma and somatic approaches means you receive TRE not just as an exercise, but as a genuinely integrated part of your healing.

At Providence Therapy, TRE is offered by a certified TRE practitioner with deep grounding in polyvagal-informed somatic work, trauma-focused therapy, and nervous system regulation more broadly. This means TRE at Providence is never offered as a standalone fix; it is one well-chosen thread in a larger, personalized treatment tapestry. For some clients, it will be a central modality; for others, a powerful complement to EMDR, parts-based work, or somatic embodiment approaches. And for many, it becomes something even more valuable over time: a self-directed practice they take home and continue independently, building nervous system resilience and a capacity for genuine rest that extends far beyond the therapy room.

Trauma Release Exercises (TRE) Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly are neurogenic tremors and are they safe?

Neurogenic tremors are the body's own natural, involuntary shaking response, initiated by the nervous system, not consciously performed. They are the same mechanism animals use after a stressful event to discharge survival energy and return to baseline. Far from being a sign of distress, neurogenic tremors are a deeply intelligent self-regulating process. When activated in a safe, guided context and within the window of tolerance, they are not only safe, they are the mechanism through which TRE produces its effects. At Providence, your TRE sessions are always facilitated by a certified practitioner who will ensure the process is introduced gradually, paced carefully, and held within a supportive clinical framework.

What can I expect in a first TRE session at Providence?

Your first session will begin with a conversation about what brings you in, how your body currently holds stress, and what to expect from TRE. Your practitioner will walk you through the exercise sequence step by step, making sure you understand and feel comfortable at each stage before progressing. The tremoring that follows is gentle and self-paced - you are always in control of its intensity and duration, and your practitioner will guide you throughout. Most people describe their first experience as surprising, a little curious, and often deeply relaxing. There is no performance involved; you simply allow your body to do what it naturally knows how to do.

Do I need to have experienced trauma for TRE to be helpful?

Not at all, this is one of TRE's most accessible and widely applicable qualities. While TRE is genuinely effective for people navigating PTSD, trauma, and complex stress histories, it is equally valuable for anyone carrying the accumulated physical tension of a busy, demanding, or high-pressure life. Burnout, chronic stress, anxiety, physical tension, sleep difficulties, and emotional flatness; all of these can respond meaningfully to TRE practice. If you have a body and a nervous system, TRE has something to offer you.

Will I have to talk about my trauma or difficult experiences?

No, and this is one of the qualities that makes TRE particularly appealing for many clients. TRE works directly with the body and the nervous system, bypassing the need to verbally narrate or consciously process difficult experiences. The tremors do the work at a physiological level, without requiring you to revisit the story. This makes TRE especially accessible for people who find talk-based approaches activating, who don't have clear narrative access to what they're carrying, or who simply want a more body-led path to relief.

Can I eventually practice TRE on my own at home?

Yes, and building toward independent practice is actually one of the goals. One of TRE's most empowering qualities is that once you have learned the practice safely and developed an understanding of how to work with your own tremor response, it becomes a self-directed tool you can use independently on a regular basis. Your practitioner will guide you progressively toward this autonomy, ensuring you have the self-awareness and skills to practice safely and effectively on your own. Many clients find that TRE becomes a valued part of their ongoing self-care routine.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on your goals and what you're working with. Some clients experience meaningful relief within just a few guided sessions and transition relatively quickly to independent practice. For those integrating TRE into a broader trauma treatment process alongside other modalities, the work will naturally unfold over a longer period. Your practitioner will work collaboratively with you to find the right pace and approach - always guided by what your nervous system is responding to and ready for.
