Before we train your brain, we want to actually understand it. Think of this as your brain's intake appointment, and it's a fascinating one.
why you might bere here
Maybe you've been managing symptoms for a long time and you're ready to understand the neurological picture underneath them. Maybe you're considering neurofeedback and want to ensure any training you do is genuinely targeted to your brain's specific patterns rather than based on a generic protocol. Or maybe you're simply deeply curious about what your brain is actually doing, and the idea of having objective, visual data to work from feels like a significant and meaningful starting point.
A neurofeedback assessment is the required first step before any EEG neurofeedback training at Providence, and for good reason. The brain is not one-size-fits-all, and neither is effective neurofeedback. What shows up as anxiety in one person's brain looks entirely different in another's. What drives attention difficulties, mood instability, sleep disruption, or cognitive fog varies at the neural level from person to person. A thorough assessment is what allows us to work with your brain rather than a generalized idea of what brains like yours might need.
how therapy helps
At Providence, we offer two assessment options so you can choose the level of depth and data that makes sense for where you are. The first is our Interview-Style EEG Neurofeedback Assessment, a 90-minute in-depth clinical interview that explores your history, symptoms, lifestyle, and treatment goals in detail. It doesn't involve brain mapping technology and is ideal for those who prefer a less technical starting point, want to explore neurofeedback without the full QEEG process, or have simpler presentations. It provides a rich clinical foundation for personalized treatment planning and costs $300.
The second option is our Comprehensive QEEG Brain Mapping Assessment, the gold standard in neurofeedback evaluation and the most data-driven approach we offer. This is a two-appointment process. Your first appointment runs 1.5 to 2 hours in-person and combines a detailed clinical interview with a high-resolution 19-channel EEG recording that captures electrical activity across multiple brain regions simultaneously. That data is then analyzed using spectral, coherence, and connectivity measures to generate detailed colour-coded brain maps showing where your neural activity diverges from normative patterns. Approximately one week later, you return for a 1 to 1.5-hour follow-up appointment, available in-person or virtually, where your provider walks you through your personalized brain map, shares a comprehensive findings report, and collaboratively builds a targeted neurofeedback treatment plan designed specifically around your brain's unique profile. The total cost for both appointments is $850. Assessment is required prior to beginning any EEG neurofeedback services at Providence.

For Your Clarity
Yes. An assessment is required before beginning any EEG neurofeedback training at our clinic. This is not a formality. It is what allows us to ensure that your neurofeedback protocol is genuinely targeted to your brain's specific patterns rather than a generic approach. Neurofeedback training without proper assessment is a bit like being prescribed medication without a diagnosis. The assessment is what makes the treatment meaningful.
The right choice depends on your goals, your comfort with technology, and how much data you want to inform your treatment. The Interview-Style Assessment is a great starting point for those with less complex presentations, those who are exploring neurofeedback for the first time, or those who prefer a less technical process. The Comprehensive QEEG Brain Mapping is the stronger choice for those dealing with more complex or treatment-resistant presentations, those who want the most precisely targeted neurofeedback protocol possible, or those who are simply drawn to having objective neurological data as part of their care. Your provider can help you decide during an initial conversation if you're unsure.
A cap with 19 sensors is placed on your scalp, which reads the electrical activity produced by your brain without delivering any input or stimulation. You will simply sit quietly in a relaxed, awake state while the recording takes place. It is entirely non-invasive and painless. The sensors pick up brainwave activity across multiple regions simultaneously, producing a detailed dataset that our clinical team then analyzes to generate your brain maps. Most people find it straightforward and interesting rather than uncomfortable.
Your brain maps provide a visual representation of your brainwave activity compared to a normative database of healthy brain function across your age group. Areas where your brain is producing too much or too little of specific brainwave frequencies, or where connectivity between regions is disrupted, are highlighted in color. This makes it possible to see, quite literally, where dysregulation is present and how it may be connected to the symptoms you are experiencing. Your provider will walk you through every aspect of the map at your follow-up appointment so the findings are fully accessible and understandable.
Your follow-up results appointment is typically scheduled approximately one week after your initial QEEG recording session. This allows time for thorough analysis of your EEG data, integration with your clinical interview findings, and development of a personalized treatment plan. The follow-up session is 1 to 1.5 hours and can be attended in-person or virtually, whichever is more convenient for you.
Yes, and we encourage it where relevant. You will receive a comprehensive written findings report following your assessment that summarizes your brain map results, identified dysregulations, and the clinical recommendations that follow from them. This report can be shared with psychiatrists, physicians, other therapists, or any other practitioners involved in your care, making the QEEG a genuinely integrative piece of your broader health picture.
